What to Expect

Led by orthodontic genius Dr Sven Bacchus, our entire Woodlawn Ortho team is committed to finding the perfect orthodontic solution for your orthodontic issue. If you have any orthodontic concerns at all, book your initial consultation today. At this first visit, we will take the time to listen to your concerns, and then provide a free orthodontic examination . From this, Dr Bacchus will be able to indicate whether or not treatment is needed. If we find that treatment is recommended, we will then outline a plan of action, starting with the best time to get started with treatment! The plan will also include in-depth discussions on fees for orthodontic care, general payment options and insurance benefits.

Once we have your go-ahead to proceed with treatment, our team then works to gather all the information required to set up a customized, individualized treatment plan designed to specifically fit your particular issue as well as your work, lifestyle and more. This includes taking diagnostic records such as x-rays, photographs and impressions of the teeth which will allow us to develop an appropriate treatment plan for the patient according to your unique tooth and jawbone structure.

Once we have your treatment plan in place, we will then design, create, and fit the physical appliances necessary to correct your orthodontic situation. We will also provide you with a comprehensive care-plan and package to ensure maximum efficacy of treatment.

You can also expect to go through at least two stages of orthodontic treatment: an active corrective stage followed by a retention stage. (Note: some patients may require a three-step plan – two active treatment stages, followed by the retention stage.) But rest assured, whatever your treatment plan, whatever your problem, whatever your concerns, Dr Bacchus and the Woodlawn Ortho team will be with you every step of the way. Each and every option, phase and solution will be outlined to you at every stage, allowing you to have realistic expectations as well as full knowledge of what is happening when. We are also here to answer any and all questions, no matter how big or small!

You may be concerned about how long the treatment may take – braces are known for having to be in place for extended periods of time. On average, it takes about 24 months to complete an orthodontic treatment. Some patients require less than 12 months, but there are also patients requiring up to 3 years of treatment before their teeth reach the desired position.

It is important to note that orthodontics is not a one-size-fits-all solution and each patient’s mouth is unique. So, while we are able to give some idea of length of treatment up front, it is important to remember this.

We will reassess how your treatment plan is going at every check-up and keep you apprised of any changes and timing expectations as we go.

Our job is to:

• Carry out the plan step by step
• Provide a care-plan for at-home maintenance, outlining proper diet, efficient hygiene techniques, treatment objectives and the things you need to do to help achieve optimal treatment success

Your job is to:

• Understand why the teeth are being straightened and the treatment plan – if you don’t, ask questions at every stage!
• Employ proper daily dental hygiene, including brushing after eating anything and flossing at least once each day
• Avoid hard and sticky foods and minimize sugar in the diet
• Always wears elastics and other appliances
• Keep all appointments
• Report lost or broken appliances and come in for replacements immediately
